For me, art has always been about the journey rather than the destination. Like leading wilderness rafting expeditions, painting is an adventure fueled by curiosity, discovery, and an openness to the unexpected. Every piece is a record of the creative process—a chance to explore, develop new skills, and see the world with fresh awareness.

After more than 30 years of teaching wilderness appreciation on the river and over 20 years of teaching painting to adults, I've come to realize that both experiences share the same purpose: helping people discover something new about themselves and the world around them. My role as an instructor is not simply to teach techniques, but to guide students toward greater awareness—of light, space, color, composition, and their own unique way of seeing.

I believe that artistic ability is not a gift reserved for a select few, but a way of observing that can be learned and nurtured. Every person brings a unique perspective, whether drawing a simple stick figure or creating a finished painting. By understanding the psychology of sight and recognizing the visual relationships that make an image compelling, students begin to move beyond self-judgment and into confident, expressive creation.

My goal is to demystify the painting process, foster creativity, and provide a fun, engaging learning environment where students gain both confidence and technical skill. Through exploration, practice, and curiosity, I hope to help others discover that art is not about perfection—it's about learning to see.
